Small bedroom ideas for maximising space

Sebastian Nash

As the place where you sleep and relax, your bedroom should be inviting, designed for comfort and conducive to relaxation.

But, what do you do when space is limited?

While furnishing and decorating a small bedroom may require extra thinking and creativity, with the right layout and furniture, your small bedroom can boast enormous potential.

From beds with concealed storage to platform tables that seamlessly integrate into your bed, KING crafts multifunctional furniture that offers the versatility small bedrooms require.

This article highlights small bedroom design ideas and shares advice on how to maximise space in your small bedroom.

To utilise your small bedroom space effectively, make considered and strategic furniture choices such as the Promenade Storage Bed.

What furniture is best for a small bedroom?

A well-designed bedroom with multifunctional furniture will make all the difference in creating a comfortable bedroom and the illusion of space.

For example, a bed with hidden storage is one way to maximise storage in your bedroom without compromising on style or space.

Look for a platform storage bed, such as Serenade and Promenade, that does not have a footboard. These storage beds take up less floor space and help widen the walking area. Beds with soft-round edges and clean lines will also help create a more open look.

While it may seem counterintuitive, small spaces do not need small furniture. Style Director, Kerrie-Ann Jones says a large bed can actually make the bedroom feel bigger.

Jasper is a showstopping bed that becomes a focal point in the room. It makes the room feel so comfortable and spacious, I just wanted to dive into the bed! When you see something large and visual, it looks more exciting and sophisticated. It can really open up the space.”  Kerrie-Ann explains.

How do you maximise space in a small bedroom?

Furniture aside, there are many creative ways to create the illusion of space in your small bedroom.

Along with creating the illusion of space, styling choices and carefully considering furniture placement can help achieve a functional and comfortable bedroom that uses the space most efficiently.

Place your bed against the centre of the largest wall in your room to allow equal walking space on both sides. This helps to create balance and flow and prevents the bed from looking cramped in a corner or against a wall.

Use mirrors to create the illusion of extra space

Large mirrors are a great addition to small bedrooms, particularly when positioned to reflect the natural light beaming in through a window. This will help filter more light into your bedroom and make the room look more spacious.

Anchor your bedroom with a rug

From a practical standpoint, rugs are soft under your feet and bring warmth to your flooring. From a design standpoint, the right rug effortlessly anchors your bedroom and creates layers of interest, depth and intrigue.

Kerrie-Ann says layering your bed on top of an oversized rug can effortlessly open up your space and make it appear larger. Rugs are also an opportunity to introduce colour into your room and show your style aesthetic.

“A rug anchors the space. It adds an extra layer and makes the bed feel like this is where it's supposed to be. The room feels more comfortable and luxurious as well.” says Kerrie-Ann.

As for rug size, KING Brand Ambassador Neale Whitaker, says to go as big as possible as nothing will make a bedroom look smaller than a small rug.

"My mantra of if in doubt, oversize is especially relevant when it comes to rugs," Neale encourages.

"In an average-sized room, a large rug will feel balanced, and even in a small room, a large rug can create the illusion of size."

"A useful rule of thumb is to choose a rug large enough to accommodate all four feet of your furniture. Alternatively, a smaller rug should accommodate at least the front feet."
